OPAAL were delighted to speak about our national project supporting older people affected by cancer at the recent Big Advocacy Event in Wales held on 20 March. This was organised by the National Network for Older People’s Advocacy in Wales.
I was fortunate to share a platform with illustrious speakers from the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales; Merthyr and Cwm Taf Health Board, Dignity in Hospitals and the General Medical Council. I love this type of event as not only does it enable me to promote our work it also gives me boundless opportunities to speak to advocates directly about their work. As ever I came away having learned a great deal about advocacy provision on the ground across Wales.
The event was well attended by over a hundred delegates representative of advocacy organisations from across Wales several of whom expressed an interest in our work. I look forward to working together with these organisations to enthuse them further and gain a deeper commitment to working with us to explore how this work can be taken up in Wales.
Louise Hughes,The Chair of the National Network for Older People’s Advocacy in Wales which organised the conference said – “Having Kath to speak was a real honour as she spoke eloquently and with passion about the work of OPAAL and the ‘Advocacy on the Wards’ project. There was a lot of interest from the advocates and their managers with many of them excited to hear what the outcomes will be for older people. This project is so innovative and touches so many people because it is about supporting older people affected by cancer.
I am sure that as this project develops and the outcomes become clear, Welsh advocates will have a key role to play in its development.
In a future ‘Big Event’ arranged by the National Network for Older People’s Advocacy in Wales we will be thrilled to hear of the projects success. Thank you to Kath and OPAAL for being part of the day and helping to make it such a success!! “
