AgeUK Bristol: happy to be involved

Age UK Bristol is incredibly proud to be part of the Cancer, Older People and Advocacy project. We are a long-standing charity that has worked under the Age UK banner (previously Age Concern) for nearly thirty years. During this time we have developed an excellent reputation within our city and surrounding areas for being a powerful voice for older people, and the Cancer Advocacy project is a logical extension of our existing work.

The project will be part of our Information & Advice section, which has hosted our Care Home Advocacy service for the last three years. This kind of long-term, in-depth advocacy work perfectly complements our ongoing information and advice work which, while invaluable, has strict limits on what can be offered. We often find that clients would benefit from a longer-term relationship with an Age UK worker or volunteer to help them steer their way through multiple, over-lapping issues that are both practically complex and emotionally demanding, and it is exactly this kind of work that the Cancer Older People and Advocacy project will help us do more of.

Within Bristol we have good links with other advice services, with the various statutory medical services, and with the wider voluntary sector, and already we have had queries from people who want more information about accessing the service or volunteering for it. Many of our existing volunteers have expressed an interest in the project, particularly as they know that high-quality training will be provided, and we hope to be up and running and seeing clients very soon.

The launching of a new project, especially one as important as this, is an exciting and nerve-wracking time, but we cannot wait to get started supporting older people affected by cancer, proving the worth of advocacy in this area, and contributing to a better quality of life for people across our city at their time of greatest need.
